Manufactured Homes: The Market Facts
2002 Report

Opinions, Trends and Characteristics of
Manufactured Home Owners

What do homeowners think about their homes? What do they call them? How do they use them? Do they plan to own their current homes for a while?

Eighty-eight percent of the group surveyed said they are very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with manufactured home living. That's a pretty happy group! Fifty-seven percent of homeowners say they always plan to live in their current manufactured home. Here are some other high points:

  • Eighty percent of people surveyed own their home and use it as their primary residence.
  • "Mobile home" is still what most people call their home, although the percentage of people who refer to it as a "manufactured home" is up to 12%. Seventeen percent of people surveyed refer to their home as a "trailer" - as much as it makes those of us in the industry cringe!
  • The percentage of homes that are actually mobile remains low … only 6% of those surveyed have moved the home from one location to another in the last three years.

What do these homeowners like to do? Activities they enjoy include county and state fairs, fishing and hunting shows, stock car races and rodeos. Their favorite types of music are country and oldies, and magazines they regularly peruse include Reader's Digest and Family Circle.

This is a picture of a satisfied, stable group of homeowners. It's great news for those of us involved in the industry! These homeowners make long-term investments on their property and intend to stick around.
